Dr. Lynette’s Personal Story

“Growing up, my father struggled with many mental health challenges. I did not understand and know how to help my father. There were very few therapists who looked like me while I was a youth navigating my father’s illness, being a preacher’s kid, and constantly feeling I was on an island by herself. Over time, I developed a support system and coping skills. One of the complexities of life is managing grief. We grieve over the loss of the identity and who our loved one used to be and over the physical loss of a person.

I served as my father’s caregiver for five years until his passing while completing my doctoral degree, starting a new professional role, balancing life, and getting married. It wasn’t easy, and I was mentally exhausted at times. Many people serve in dual roles, especially in becoming parents to our parents. This can be a challenging experience. Mental wellness is imperative while managing life transitions.”
